Every HBO Comedy Ranked From Worst To Best

15. Flight Of The Conchords

Taking the ball from Tenacious D and running with it, this beloved comedy from New Zealand duo Jemaine Clement and Bret McKenzie (along with British co-creator James Bobin) excels in terms of its sitcom credentials as well as its unforgettable songs, many of which are among the finest comedy numbers ever written.

Jermaine and Bret play versions of themselves, uprooted Kiwis trying to catch a break in New York, but the pair are so delightfully otherworldly that they may as well have come from space. They’re backed by, and give generous screentime to, a fantastic supporting cast, most notably Rhys Darby as their painfully incompetent manager Murray and Kristen Schaal as Mel, the band’s singular fan/stalker.

The Concords’ USP is the music - Jermaine and Bret can turn their hand with hilarious effect (but impressive technical chops) to any genre imaginable, and do so with gusto several times an episode. They serve as their own Greek chorus, two socially stunted weirdos who can only express their feelings through song.

Everyone involved has gone on to great things, and the perfectly short lived series has cemented itself in the pantheon of comedy music for time immemorial.
