Every HBO Miniseries Ranked Worst To Best
35. The Young Pope (2016)
The Young Pope had all the makings of a HBO great, but manages, much like Catherine the Great, to squander its basic influences. Jude Law is the best thing in the series, playing Pope Pius XIII as he takes on the Vatican's customs and threatens to derail the entire establishment. Other than Law, little of the show's mechanics seem to work.
Aside from the supporting cast (Diane Keaton, James Cromwell) and the visual delights of the scenery, The Young Pope is a narrative shambles, unable to settle. There's dark humour and daring religious themes, but no real reason to focus on either of them.
