36. Catherine The Great (2019)

The New Pope
Sky

Catherine the Great is set in 18th century Russia and stars Dame Helen Mirren as the titular Empress. She is joined by Jason Clarke and is assisted by a plot revolving around the entirety of Catherine II's reign.

And yet, somehow, Catherine the Great is all surface and no meaning. The wardrobe is impressive, the acting stellar, but the story deviates jarringly between plot-points and never takes the time to settle on a thread. What you're left with is a factually ambiguous visual treat that is forgotten as soon as the last episode closes things up, and given the potential, that really is a shame.
