The 12 Days of Christine is a shattering dramatic masterwork. In just half an hour, it establishes a rich and emotional storyline, fully develops every single one of its characters, gives us a full sweep of 12 years in the protagonist's life and then concludes with a gut-wrenching ending that'll leave many viewers sobbing.

The episode has an astonishing and ingenious screenplay, not to mention a fantastic lead performance from Sheridan Smith and excellent direction.

It would feel wrong not to put this at number one. Not only is it a televisual gem in every single way, but it really represents everything great about Inside No. 9. It's got masterful writing, terrific performances, a shocking twist ending and fully displays Shearsmith and Pemberton's ability to create fully-realized worlds and stories in the space of just half an hour.

Will Inside No. 9 ever top this amazing episode? Well, never say never. After all, this is a show that never stops subverting your expectations.
