20. The Stakeout - PC Thompson's New Partner Is A Vampire Who Killed His Former Partner
Plot: Two policemen, PC Thompson and PC Varney (Pemberton and Shearsmith respectively), one of them haunted by the death of his partner, stake out a graveyard in their police car.
This twist did come out of nowhere and wasn't built up to much before, but that didn't make it any less entertaining.
It was an incredibly surprising turn of events, especially since PC Varney was strongly implied to be dead in the episode's opening flash-forward but was actually 'undead' all along, and Varney's secret is also revealed in a very clever way.
Throughout the episode, the two cops had been discussing the top five police procedural cliches and when Varney reveals his true nature, he lists five clues that he was a vampire that no-one would've picked up on during a first viewing.
The episode concludes with another twisted ending, as Thompson becomes the first meal of his undead former partner.
The Stakeout is one of the lower-tier Inside No. 9 episodes, but this ending is fabulous and elevates it quite a bit.
