Every Inside No. 9 Twist Ranked

19. Cold Comfort - George Is Chloe

Inside No 9
BBC

Plot: A volunteer, named Andy (Pemberton), at a helpline receives a call from a suicidal teenage girl named Chloe and everything begins to unravel.

The initial Chloe phone call is so disturbing that when it turns out to be someone putting on a voice, it's a huge, huge relief.

But then, it's discovered that not only is this prank caller one of the helpline staff, but it's actually George (Shearsmith), the person who runs the helpline. After years of listening to people's problems, he has become desperate to be heard himself.

It's unsettling as hell to say the least and it presents a very interesting concept: that the people running the helpline are more messed up than many of the actual callers. It's also implied that another volunteer quit as she was so traumatized by George's many prank calls.

As if all of this wasn't grim enough, the episode ends with a classic Inside No. 9 sting in the tale. Earlier, when distressed by 'Chloe's' phone call, Andy snapped at a woman and told her to just get over the death of her cat. This woman subsequently killed herself, and George told the woman's son where Andy worked. The episode ends with the son pulling a gun on Andy.

Things rarely end well for anyone on this show, but we wouldn't have it any other way.
