15. Misdirection - Gabriel Gets Revenge For His Grandfather's Murder

Inside No 9
BBC

Plot: A student (Fionn Whitehead) interviews a mysterious magician named Neville Griffin (Shearsmith), who has a dark secret in his past.

This delightfully unpredictable episode is basically a revenge story, in which the student, Gabriel, gets revenge on Neville for killing his grandfather (Pemberton) in order to steal his magic trick.

The reveal that Gabriel was related to the murdered magician was foreseeable, but the rest of the story certainly wasn't. The episode's title is appropriate, since the entire thing is a wonderful exercise in misdirection.

Throughout the episode, Gabriel is setting Neville up and is planning to frame him for the murder of his own wife (Jill Halfpenny), who is apparently murdered (off-screen) but Neville never realizes this and neither do we.

Then, along comes to the non-linear ending in which it's shown how Gabriel did it and seemingly insignificant moments suddenly become very important. This whole episode is a wickedly smart trick and Gabriel fooled every single one of us, as well as the other characters.

It doesn't feel entirely logical that Gabriel would kill a completely innocent woman (he never came across as that sort of character) but other than that, it is an undeniably superb twist.
