16. Nana's Party - The Paramedic Is Actually A Male Stripper

Inside No 9
BBC

Plot: A family gathering for the matriarch's birthday party goes to s**t in every possible way.

This one was basically Pemberton and Shearsmith trolling their viewers... and it was absolutely bloody hysterical in every single way.

At this point, we all expected darkness, violence and death in every episode of the show and the opening to Nana's Party hinted at another such story. It showed a paramedic rushing to a house, but then the episode cuts to earlier in the day.

Throughout this episode, viewers will anxiously wait to find out what terrible thing has happened and several times, characters seem very close to harm... but no-one dies or is even particularly harmed at the party.

Once the paramedic arrives, he's revealed as a male stripper who does a provocative dance to the Casualty theme tune. It was a birthday present from the grandmother's son-in-law (Shearsmith), a notorious prankster.

As a very clever subversion of expectations and as a painfully funny gag, this comedic twist ending is a joyous delight that'll leave viewers rolling on the floor with laughter.
