Every Main Character From True Detective Ranked From Worst To Best
13. Elisa Montgomery - Season 3
It seemed at one point that season three was about to tie into the first, and the once-disconnected anthology series was about to unravel a conspiracy that could expand across multiple future seasons. The theories that were online and voiced on podcasts at the time, were themselves echoed by a character in the third season.
This came in the form of Elisa Montgomery; a True Crime documentary filmmaker who was making a film about the Purcell Kids' disappearance. At one point in the season, her character breaks the fourth wall and attempts to link the killings of season one to that of the Purcell case. But a moment later, Wayne shuts hers (and audience') theories down and tells her things are not what they appear.
Elisa is a conduit for True Detective fans and a representation of true crime addicts. Elisa appears to not only misread the entire case she's interviewing Wayne about, but finds and connects theories that weren't there to begin with.
That being said, her role to vocalize theories and push the narrative forward serves as a great steer for the disoriented Wayne Hays. If nothing else, Elisa works as a great investigative mind against Wayne's scrambled memories.
