Though The Office will most likely go down as Gervais’s magnum opus, Extras, which had the unenviable task of following in its shadow just a few years later, is the funniest show of his career to date.

Whilst it hasn’t been as influential on the genre, nor spawned countless international remakes like The Office did, watched now and it’s still one of the most consistently hilarious comedies ever produced.

Even the inclusion of celebrities, playing exaggerated versions of themselves adds to the hilarity of it all without ever detracting, or feeling slightly jarring, like it does at times in Life’s Too Short.

As a whole, Extras stands up as one of the best and funniest sitcoms of all time, but unfortunately one that lives in the shadow of the cultural juggernaut that is The Office. As a result it’s rarely given the praise it deserves for its brilliantly written characters, belly-laugh moments and its perfect heartwarming finale.
