13. The Witches

Blackadder Series 2
Warner Bros.

The original The Witches was a well received 1990 film, based on the 1983 book from beloved children's author Roald Dahl. Sadly, Dahl himself would pass away mere months after the movie's release.

A typical plot from the influential writer sees a young boy and his grandmother attempting to foil the various plots of a group of demonic witches masquerading as normal women, who are intent on transforming the world's children into mice.

With reboots very much in vogue over the last couple of years, a remake of The Witches was released in 2020, but this was perhaps a story that should have been confined to history, and left to stand as a product of its era.

In light of the re-examination of the likes of The Jungle Book's racial undertones, or problematic plot behind Sleeping Beauty, many questioned whether films should still be being released that rely so heavily on assumed audience revulsion towards those with limb differences. In fairness, Warner Bros. would go onto publicly apologise for any offence caused, but the damage was already done.

It didn't help that the Anne Hathaway fronted film itself was pretty naff.
