3. Skinner’s Sense Of Snow

Simpsons Christmas
Fox

This one is a truly vintage Simpsons episode. If it had been a little more Christmas-centric rather than its general wintery theme, it might even have come out on top.

A rarity for the Christmas special, the plot has little if anything to do with family, instead throwing the focus on Bart and Lisa. They, along with a handful of other students, brave the harsh conditions to arrive for their final day of school before the winter break. Since no staff arrive, Skinner watches movies with them all day, and with the blinds drawn they’re completely unaware of the blizzard locking them in the school.

We get to see the power dynamics shift here seamlessly, developing our understanding of each character. Nelson initially tries to start a rebellion but lacks Bart’s charm. It isn’t until Skinner hits Vietnam mode that Bart begins an uprising, first by trying to escape then taking revenge as his plan is foiled.

It is quite easy to forget this is a Christmas episode as you watch. But snow is the constant barrier, keeping them locked in, and the kids worry about missing Christmas morning. There’s enough for it to count, but it’s a great watch all year round.
