Every Star Trek Opening Titles Ranked Worst To Best

4. Star Trek: Discovery

A LOT of thought and planning went into the opening sequence for Star Trek's seventh ongoing series. With the idea that the human race was in its second renaissance being the jumping-off point, Prologue, aka Kyle Cooper, though this time joined by designer Ana Criado, sat down with the producers to design something that would stand out from the pack.

Alex Kurtzman was insistent that this sequence have its fixed place in the canon. Designer and historian Kurt Mattila was brought on board as the in-house Trekkie to advise the team, something that he was extremely honoured to be a part of. Initially, the team came up with a theme of using the transporter effect to some extent, having characters beaming from one side of the screen to the other.

When this was scrapped, the blueprint idea was born. Ana Criado designed the sequence where Discovery emerges from a field of dilithium crystals without even realising that these crystals powered the ship. The lack of opening monologue was influenced directly by the fact that the captain in this case was Gabriel Lorca, who of course turns out not to care very much about exploring the galaxy. The main title music was composed by Jeff Russo.
