17. Tricorder In Anthology Of Interest II

Star Trek Futurama
Fox

The Anthology of Interest returns in Anthology of Interest II.

The first story of the episode features around Bender asking what it would be like if he was human. The story revolves around The Professor managing to turn Bender Human and Bender, unable to control all his new desires, eventually eats himself to death. The final scene features a tremendously fat Bender being unveiled and ridiculed by The Professor's fellow scientists. Bender teaches them all to enjoy life and they throw a party, at the end of which they discover Bender has died.

This is where the reference comes into it. When they cannot get Bender to respond, Zoidberg scans him to see if he is still alive, concluding that he has died. The reference is what Zoidberg scans him with. Zoidberg pulls out an Original Series Tricorder and scans the enormous frame. The noises the tricorder emits are not those of the one in the show though, but the noise of the communicators in Star Trek: Enterprise.

This way, the showrunners managed to put 2 references to the show into one moment. It's fun and while seeming inaccurate at first, is just another easter egg.
