Every Star Trek Reference In Futurama
14. Wrath-Of-Conrail In The 30% Iron Chef
The 30% Iron Chef follows Bender as he attempts to become a chef, despite having a lack of taste and being generally terrible at cooking. He runs away from the crew when he overheard them talking about how awful the food he made was. After trying and failing to convince Elzar to teach him to cook, Bender becomes a travelling hobo, determined to learn how to cook.
It is during one of these scenes that the Star Trek reference comes in. As Bender is travelling, he travels on the 'Wrath-of-Conrail'. A clear reference to Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. The Wrath of Khan is perhaps the most famous of the Star Trek Movies, and definitely the most famous of The Original Series films.
It has Khan, a legendary foe from the Original Series episode Spaceseed, come back to take down Kirk, who he blames for accidentally marooning him on a desert planet. Khan is a great villain and Wrath of Khan has gone down in nerd history. It is no surprise that Futurama would reference the movie at some point considering the history surrounding the film, which is a part of classic Star Trek lore.
