Every Star Trek Reference In Futurama
7. Takei And Bakula In Bender's Game
Bender's game, the third movie in the quartet, is perhaps the one with the strangest plot. The film follows the story of the crew getting sucked into an alternate fantasy reality based around Dungeons and Dragons.
Act 1 of the film features the crew getting into a demolition derby after Leela is insulted by some trucker. 2 of the entrants of the derby are George Takei and Scott Bakula. The two are flying in one-person Star Trek-style ships. Takei flies in an NX Class ship, similar to the original Enterprise. Scott Bakula is travelling in an Ambassador Class ship. Before Takei destroys Bakula and is destroyed himself he yells at him 'Way to kill the franchise, Bakula!'
This references how Enterprise is seen as one of the worse series of Star Trek and ended Star Trek series being made until Discovery came out 12 years after Enterprise's cancellation in 2005.
Takei has appeared in multiple episodes of Star Trek, playing himself. As references go, having cast members of the show always adds a funnier detail, with the cameos serving as further easter eggs within the show. It is clear that the showrunners had a great deal of love for Star Trek and scoring the actual cast brings a lot of joy to the episodes they appear.
