Every Star Trek Reference In Futurama

6. The Genesis Wave In Into The Wild Green Yonder

Star Trek Futurama

Into the Wild Green Yonder is the final of the four Futurama movies. The story features around the attempt by Leo Wong to construct a 9 hole miniature golf course around the galaxy.

This is protested by Leela and a group called the eco-feministas. While this is going on Fry, who has found himself able to read minds, is given the task of hunting down the last of a species called The Dark Ones, which are intent on wiping out all life, before it destroys the last Encyclopod, a race intent on preserving the DNA of all living things.

The references are all minor ones in the film. The first is right at the beginning of the film. There is an explosion in deep space that has a similar effect to the Genesis wave at the end of Wrath of Khan, bringing life to barren planets. This is not the only reference to Wrath of Khan in the film. When the crew arrive at Mars Vegas they fly past the Botany Bay hotel, named after Khan's infamous ship. The Dark Ones appearance as a leech that Leela wants to save even mirrors the worms from Ceti Alpha V that Khan uses to control Chekov.

There are two more minor references in the film. Leela, when trying to save the leech talks abut cuddly animals and mentions tribbles. and when surveying the galaxy for life, Bender looks through device very similar to the one Spock used on the bridge of the Enterprise.
