4. Vulcan Nerve Pinch In Proposition Infinity

Star Trek Futurama
Comedy Central

Proposition Infinity was an episode that sought to add to the debate surrounding gay marriage that was going on in the U.S. at the time. The episode did this by exploring robosexual marriage, the union between a human and robot, which was explored between Amy and Bender who have e a relationship within the episode. The Star Trek references begin with a Vulcan nerve pinch used by a cop who says 'Spock you out.'

The main reference comes from the appearance of George Takei within the episode, who moderates a debate on the issue. As a gay man and LGBT activist, the issue of Gay marriage was personal to Takei and his appearance in the episode was likely not a coincidence.

As well as this, two Cheron natives of opposing skin colours are seen in the crowd in support of robosexual marriage, The Cheron natives were introduced in The Original Series. There had been a bloody race war on their planet between the upper class who were black on the right side of their body and white on the left side, and the subjugated class who were white on the right side of their body and black on the left.

The episode dealt with the idea of race, an idea that was prevalent in the Civil rights movement during the 60s when Star Trek was airing. Having The Cheron natives appear in an episode dealing with a modern-day civil rights issue brought the whole thing full circle in a simple way.
