Taking this entire narrative and spanning it across two epic seasons was a great move, and this second half brought the spectacle to new heights.

Carrying on directly from the last arc, this one shows as Alice vows to protect the human territory from the invading dark territory, leading to a slew of epic encounters and a war for the ages. Unlike the previous season, this one introduces Asuna into the mix, which adds something a little more familiar to the show.

War of the Underworld doesn't work too hard to do anything different narratively, but it delivers on the visuals well. It even ends up rivalling the spectacle that was presented in the SAO Movie: Ordinal Scale, which pulled out all the stops to be as big as possible.

Overall, it's a fantastic conclusion to the Alicization arc and ditched a lot of the awkwardness of the previous seasons, which grants it the highest position here.
