Every Time The Simpons REALLY Killed Characters
3. Mona Simpson
Grab the tissues guys, we're firmly in sadness territory now.
Often the subject of the show's most emotionally resonant episodes, Mona Simpson was a beautifully written character that gave the series' Golden Era some much-needed gravitas in the feels department.
First appearing in 'Mother Simpson', Homer's long-thought dead mother suddenly appeared out of the woodwork, claiming that she'd been on the run for an act of eco-terrorism she committed back in the sixties. The episode is considered a classic by many and stands-tall as one of the show's finest half-hours for how effortlessly it blended humour with the heavier themes of child abandonment and forgiveness.
That final image of Homer staring up at the stars is simultaneously beautiful, yet heart-wrenching.
Mona made a few sporadic appearances after 'Mother Simpson' which varied in quality, but her final appearance in the season nineteen episode 'Mona Leaves-a' left a particularly nasty sting. Upon discussing the trauma Homer suffered from Mona abandoning him, the two get into a heated argument and part ways. Once the dust has settled, Homer tries to make amends, only to find Mona dead in an armchair.
A truly sad ending to what was already an incredibly bittersweet story.
