In a perfect world we’d be expecting the first teaser trailer for Doctor Who Season 3 to drop in the coming months, but alas, it wasn’t to be.

Due to a series of complicated factors, the season has instead fallen into something of a development hell – but that doesn’t mean things haven’t been chugging along behind the scenes, and planning for the next season of Doctor Who might actually be further along than you think.

So while we wait for news about the next phase of the Whoniverse, let’s round up every detail, rumour, and dissect every single quote to within an inch of its life, about the mythical Doctor Who Season 3!

8. Several Season 3 Episodes Have Already Been Written

While the exact form Season 3 will take has yet to be determined and it obviously isn’t close to going before cameras, Russell T Davies has actually had several episodes mapped out for quite some time now.

In an interview with SFX Magazine all the way back in November 2023, RTD stated that, "I'm planning Season 3 now." A few months later in June 2024, things had progressed even further, as the showrunner revealed that he was currently working on the fourth script of the season – indicating that several other scripts had already been completed, or at the very least were quite far along.

Whether he had assurances from the BBC or Disney we don’t know, but clearly, at that point, RTD was very confident that he would get to make more Doctor Who beyond his initial two-season remit.

This also wasn’t the first time he mentioned Season 3, and even Season 4 – at the 60th Anniversary musical celebration in September 2023, he joked, "Series 4, I'm gonna write an episode where it's all music, no dialogue. We're planning ahead… there's no room in Series 3."

As for what these Season 3 scripts may have been about? Sadly any specific story details have not been revealed, although we can make a very educated guess about what one of the driving plots of Season 3 would have been…
