Fake Doctors, Real Friends: 10 Things We Learned About Scrubs From Episode One
6. John C. McGinley Often Received His Monologues The Night Before Shooting
While JD may have been the main character, Scrubs created a huge array of characters that fans came to love, one of the most popular of which was Dr. Cox. JD's hard-as-nails mentor was an excellent character for so many reasons, but the one that sticks out possibly more so than any other is his ability to rant.
From the very beginning of the show, Dr Cox would launch himself into these always hilarious, usually deeply insulting rants about almost anything. These became so loved that JD even made Perry an encyclopedia detailing every one of them.
It was always funny to think that Dr Cox was coming up with these long monologues off the top of his head, and though this wasn't true of actor John C. McGinley, it was the next best thing. According to Zach Braff, often McGinley wouldn't receive the scripts detailing his mammoth dialogue until the night before shooting, leaving him with next to no time to get everything memorised, ready to bring them to the screen as perfectly as he did.
