Fake Doctors, Real Friends Podcast: 10 Things We Learned From Bill Lawrence In Episode Three

7. The Casting Directors Weren’t Sold On Donald Faison

Some casting decisions for Scrubs came much easier than others. In the original script, Bill Lawrence actually wrote a note that for Dr. Cox he would be looking for 'a John C. McGinley type', and ended up getting John C. McGinley. Casting Chris Turk however, was slightly more difficult.

When Donald Faison came in to audition, Bill Lawrence was a big fan, and gave him a note to be enthusiastic, funny, and even a bit goofy. This was a big side of the show, and the Clueless actor nailed it. He did it a bit too well however, as the casting directors didn't believe Faison could handle the serious side of the show.

It wasn't until Bill told him to try again with it toned down, with no humour, that he had another shot at it. Again, he nailed the second audition, this time proving his dramatic chops and showing the directors how wrong they were.

If it wasn't for the persistence and encouragement of Bill Lawrence, Donald Faison would never have been cast, he would never have become best friends with Zach Braff, and we wouldn't have this podcast to listen to.
