Fake Doctors, Real Friends Podcast: 10 Things We Learned From Bill Lawrence In Episode Three
6. 'A Little Respect' Was Used To Train Audiences To Listen The Lyrics Of The Songs
Right from the very beginning, one of the most important aspects of Scrubs was the music. There were meaningful songs picked for certain moments in the show, and Bill Lawrence wanted to get the message across early that these songs were important, and were picked for a reason.
The songs were almost like another character in the show, and added another layer to typically emotional moments. In My Best Friend's Mistake, A Little Respect by Erasure featured throughout the entire episode, with multiple characters singing it at different points.
The song traveled around the hospital like a virus, in what was a subtle message from Lawrence to the fans that they needed to pay attention to the music, and really listen to the lyrics. Each song would be picked to reflect that particular moment, and would really mean something. A Little Respect was chosen as a background to JD eventually plucking up the courage to tell Elliott how he felt about her.
