Kaylee was the series' heart and soul, as her childish personality and upbeat optimism was always uplifting. She even acted as a great way of introducing us to the show's colloquialisms and language - like the use of the word "shiny". While it seems like you might need a little time to get used to her energy, the role's personality is established so quickly that you become accustomed to her in no time, and are therefore quickly invested.

However, the character wasn't just fun, as she also provided a powerful message about femininity and mechanical genius. The show portrays her as an absolute unit when it comes to engineering, as her knowledge of star-ships and Serenity's inner working are unmatched. This makes her innocent and feminine presentation all the more interesting. While others shows would depict such a character as rough and ready, Firefly allows her childish, girly self, and a great mechanic at the same time.

Jewel Staite does a phenomenal job making Kaylee equal parts loveable and integral to the ship's running, which makes any danger surrounding her intense, and all of her fun moments utterly endearing.
