4. Richard Burke
Many people like to look at Richard as a speedbump in Monica and Chandler's epic romance, but limiting him to just that strips you of a really great character. Sure, he almost cost fans their beloved Monica/Chandler engagement and did break Monica's heart at the end of their relationship. But, before any of that, he was an amusing, charming and sophisticated presence in the show.
This ophthalmologist pulled up in the second season and started a relationship with Monica. Although their twenty-one-year age gap was a source of concern, they actually had a very healthy and loving dynamic. Richard was the mature and caring figure Monica needed in her life, and the two were perfect for each other. Well, not as perfect as her eventual husband, but you get the idea.
It was easy to get swept up in Richard's charm as his slower pacing, and gentle tones made him a very different presence compared to the rest of the cast. He was an absolute stand-out, and a great guy up until the end.
