Season 9 Episode 1 By now it should be clear that the single most compelling story-line of the entire show was - unsurprisingly - the relationship of Ross and Rachel. This episode at the start of the penultimate season was yet another false start, after Joey accidentally proposed to Rachel at the end of the eighth season despite Ross' intention to try and start again. In her emotional state, Rachel accepted Joey's "proposal" leading to a classical farce episode in which none of the characters really know what's going on between who (in between Monica and Chandler attempting to have sex in a quiet room in the hospital). And then just as it looked like the show's best love story was finally back on track Ross realised that Rachel was wearing the ring, seemingly ending any chance that they could work.
