They were simply two longtime friends who gradually developed feelings for one another and went on to have a strong and healthy relationship — a relationship that almost everyone desires. Many people fall in love and then realize the person they're with is also their best friend, but these two did it backwards.
The two were best friends for the first couple of seasons before finally admitting that they have feelings for each other. They eventually started dating (in secret), got engaged, and tied the knot, cementing their romance as one of the best in the history of television.
