Futurama: 15 Obscure Easter Eggs & References You Probably Missed

13. Cygnus X-1

Here€™s another fun science reference. In the episode The Prisoner of Benda, the opening caption during the credits reads €œWhat happens in Cygnus X-1 stays in Cygnus X-1." First discovered in 1964, Cygnus X-1 was one of the earliest candidates to be considered a black hole. In fact, it was actually the subject of a bet between physicists Stephen Hawking and Kip Thorne, with Hawking betting against Cygus X-1 being a black hole. It still isn€™t 100% confirmed, but we€™re now pretty sure that it is indeed a black hole, or at least we're confident enough that Hawking was willing to admit defeat.
