Futurama: 50 Best Ever Episodes

4. Jurassic Bark

While Futurama has come to be known as a show that can make you laugh like no other, it can also break down its walls and produce something that is both funny and achingly beautiful. The relationship between Fry and his dog, known as Seymour, is one that will hit home for practically anybody who has owned a pet in their life. It's a painful story about letting go of the past, moving on from the things you wanted in exchange for what's right now. Fry's desire to have a part of his past back is the focus of the episode, and it reinforces everything we love about him. He's even willing to sacrifice his own happiness, and all of it for the love of his dog. The closing montage apparently resulted in the Futurama writers receiving mountains of hate mail, a reminder of the emotional power that the episode carries.

3. Leela's Homeworld

At long last, the truth behind Leela's origins are revealed in this moving episode that sees her re-united with her parents. And according to the writers of Futurama, Leela's origin story had been conceived as far back as before the show began; her parents even make a cameo in the season two episode "I Second That Emotion". Not only that, but the episode also has a great aura of mystery to it with the shrouded figures continuously watching Leela and allowing you to question just what is going on. The reveal of her parents is extremely well done, and Sagal does an ace job of putting forth all that fear you might expect from an orphaned child meeting their biological parents. Continuing with the Futurama tradition of sad closing montages, "Leela's Homeworld" ends with a touching look at how Leela's parents were always there to help her set to the song "Baby Love Child" by Pizzicato Five. It's a genuine moment of tenderness, a perfect ending to this tearjerker.
