Game Of Thrones: 10 Biggest Casting Mistakes

4. Gemma Whelan As Yara Greyjoy

Why It Was A Mistake: From the moment the character was shown on-screen, it was hard to look past the fact that the producers unnecessarily changed Asha's name to Yara and the fact that Yara is absolutely nothing like how Asha was characterised in the novels. Asha Greyjoy is described as a beautiful woman who is can fight, f**k, and banter with the best of what Westeros had to offer. She combined the fierceness of Linda Hamilton's Sarah Connor with the free-spiritedness (and none of the social awkwardness) of Lizbeth Salander. When comedian Gemma Whelan was cast, eyebrows were justifiably raised and all those doubts were unfortunately met. Not to dismiss Whelan's efforts, but whilst her take on Yara is certainly dark and off-beat, she just doesn't have the seductive and intimidating presence that Yara/Asha was in the books. It is difficult to buy Whelan as a bold warrior and even more difficult to believe that she can turn on the sex appeal whenever she wants. Who Should€™ve Been Cast: Speaking of Lizbeth Salander, Rooney Mara seems like the perfect fit for a character who is bold and menacing but can be seductive whenever she needs to be. Running a close second is Ruth Wilson, who can most certainly infuse Yara with the off-beat dark beauty that she normally brings to each of her roles.

My life story is nothing special. I haven't cured ebola, I'm nowhere near stopping terrorism, and I'm still working on that climate change problem. Instead, all I've done so far is put a few hundred words together in an attempt to make people laugh. You can follow me at @Fry_ying_pan but don't be offended if I don't tweet back. It's usually because I've spent too long trying to think up a witty response that the reply window has closed.
