10. Maester Luwin
Ok, Ive not exactly started on the biggest characters, but please hear me out. I always liked Maester Luwin on the show he seemed like a good guy, considerate, kind and good in a crisis, even though he was partly responsible for sending Ned Stark to Kings Landing. Outside of the Starks themselves, he seemed like one of the few truly good guys on the show, so when it came time for him to meet his maker it was really pretty shocking, entirely because it was so banal. Id like to think that nobody expected it to happen, but I think the show must have caught onto the same dramatic tropes of fellow juggernaut The Walking Dead. Namely, it throws characters right to the forefront to discuss themselves right before they bite the dust. Granted, Luwin didnt talk about himself, but he was in several protracted scenes with Theon which marked him out as a wise and noble man, attempting to save the Greyjoy heir despite his heinous crimes. Of course, it turned out to be all for nought as Theon attempted to go out in a blaze of glory, only to be knocked out by Dagmar Cleftjaw and given up to besieging Bolton host. Luwin come over to ask what the hell was going on, to which Cleftjaw seemingly on a whim decided to put his spear through the old man, in what must go down as one of the series most heartbreaking, unnecessary deaths. Granted, he doesnt actually die there the real dramatic dynamite is saved for his scene with the little Starks and Osha, where he secretly gets the wildling to put him down when the boys leave. The fact he chooses to die as he lived kindly makes this a hard watch, made all the harder by the fact Finchy from The Office didnt even need to kill him. At least Ramsay skinned all the Ironborn alive though, so every cloud has a shockingly violent silver lining.
