Game Of Thrones: 10 Most Spectacular Moments From Season 3

1. The Red Wedding, "The Rains Of Castamere"Red Wedding "The Scene Which Shall Not Be Named," is what show co-creator David Benioff called it. Non-book readers had no idea what was coming in this episode. If you had read through this part and knew what was about to happen, you probably watched this episode with a knot in your stomach. When "The Rains of Castamere" started to play at Edmure Tully and Roslin Frey's wedding reception, you started to repeatedly say "Oh sh-t," over and over again. Ok, maybe that was just me. The infamous Red Wedding is the big turning point for the books. The death of Robb Stark and the desecration of his army puts an end to the Northern rebellion and wipes out the Starks as any kind of threat. But what really leaves an impact is how the massacre goes down through Catelyn's point of view. As soon as Catelyn sees the chainmail on a Frey brood (it was Roose Bolton in the show), both she and the reader realize the wedding is a trap. What follows is horrific carnage that ends with her death. When it's over, it's easy for the reader to go back to certain parts of the book and see how the massacre is foreshadowed multiple times. The Red Wedding through the point of view of a non-reader is a different story, as it basically comes out of left field. The wedding ceremony and feast are actually nice occasions. Walder Frey makes crude jokes, Catelyn manages to smile, and Robb and Talisa bond over their unborn child. As soon as Walder announces he has a wedding gift for Talisa, everything escalates in a rapid and horrific fashion. Talisa is repeatedly stabbed in the belly by Lothar Frey, and Robb , Catelyn and his army are quickly shot down by arrows or stabbed by Frey soldiers. The final scene leaves the most impact. Catelyn grabs Frey's wife and threatens to kill her if Lord Frey doesn't let Robb go. After he nonchalantly replies he'll find another wife, Roose delivers the infamous "Lannisters send their regards" line as well as a stab in the heart to Robb. Catelyn screams in despair, kills the innocent girl and then waits for death. Her throat is slit and the silent credits roll, leaving the viewer to digest what they've just watched. The cherry on top of this bloody sundae is that Arya is right outside of the castle during the massacre, just moments from reuniting with her family. Michelle Fairley arguably gives the best and surely the most heartbreaking performance on the show so far. In a season that had many great moments, it's no question that The Red Wedding is the one that is monumental. It truly proves that no character on "Game of Thrones" is ever safe. While it's the biggest moment of the third season, it may just be one of the biggest and most shocking moments in TV history.
