Game Of Thrones: 10 Perfect Episodes
5. Blackwater (Season 2 - Episode 9)
This was the first big battle the writers gave us. If only this episode had the insane budget of the later seasons. Yeah it was all impressive, but the directors had to be clever, keeping the camera frames fairly tight and severally downplaying the action from the book version.
Never the less they did great with what they had. Tyrion's scheme to set the river ablaze went off with a bang, plus you had The Hound kicking ass before giving Joffrey whats for.
But it was one of those brilliant moments in Thrones when you were conflicted by the outcome, you didn't ever really want the Lannister's to win, but you still wanted Tyrion to pull through and get his moment of glory, especially after that rousing speech he gave...
Ultimately, Tyrion's plan worked, but after being cut down by one of Cersei's lackeys he didn't share in the victory. Again, this was another moment when fans didn't know the truth fate of a protagonist, had the writers done us over and killed another much loved character?
It was an episode indicative of the show at its peak. Nothing was going as you hoped, the bad guys won, the good guys were possibly dead and the true threat in the North was still being ignored. But all the same, viewers loved it.
