Game Of Thrones: 10 Reasons The Movie Should Be A Prequel

Not all prequels have to be terrible...

Although the next series seems to be taking as long as winter to get here, and there's still an awful lot of ground to cover in the series, Game Of Thrones doesn't actually have all that long left. It's reportedly set to run until Season 8, which means we're well past the halfway mark of the show.

However, it seems inevitable that HBO will want it to continue in one way or another, and one of the most talked about is the potential of doing a Game Of Thrones movie. On the face of it, there's a lot of sense behind this idea. The show already produces cinematic quality on a (admittedly rather large) TV budget, so it seems perfectly suited to the big-screen in that regard.

Then there's the financial aspect to consider. HBO's Sex And The City had not one but two successful films, with a third potentially on the way; Game Of Thrones may not have the same broad appeal, but you'd have to think it would do big numbers at the box-office.

Rather than simply continuing the show, which would be less interesting, they should take the opportunity to explore A Song Of Ice And Fire further, picking up on all those snippets that have been teased, heard of but never seen. If they do eventually make a movie, a prequel makes perfect sense, and these are the reasons why...

10. Explore Areas The Show Can't

Game Of Thrones already exists in a sprawling world, one it's difficult to keep track of. From Beyond-The-Wall right at the top of the North, to Dorne at the South, and the likes of Braavos and Meereen across the Narrow Sea, it's a huge universe that these characters exist in.

Unsurprisingly, there's still vast swathes of areas that the series hasn't really been able to touch upon, and never will, because the characters are never going to go there.

A prequel has less narrative restrictions. In Season 5 we had a little glimpse of Old Valyria, but it was just passing by it. How great would it be to see the place in all of its former glory?

Likewise, we could journey to the far North, to the place the White Walkers come from, or even stretch out to Asshai and the Shadow Sea. It would really broaden the horizons of the series, and bring such fantastical places to life.
