6. They Don't Know Why George R.R. Martin Trusted Them

One of the more bizarre revelations from the panel is that the pair actually had no idea who on earth George R.R. Marting gave them their blessing. After he apparently quizzed them on their knowledge of the source material, asking them several questions about their understanding of the source material, they didn't believe they'd made a good impression.

"David is describing the pre-meeting with GRRM who was questioning their bona fides and “we didn’t really have any.” We had never done TV and we didn’t have any. We don’t know why he trusted us with his life’s work.”

Quite what this revelation does for the notion that the writing lost its way without the books to guide it is anybody's guess, but it's a strange start to the relationship between the three men. Even stranger still that it's a question the pair haven't had answered in the years since.
