4. They Didn't Understand The Characters

The most common complaint that followed Season 8 is that each character's final storylines didn't feel like they were wholly in keeping with their true nature. Jaime going back to Cersei, Cersei cowering before Dany, Dany's murderous rampage turning Jon against her, Jon plunging a dagger into her heart.

While the major players were always going to evolve over the course of the show, the pair freely admitted they didn't have a full handle on them even at the very beginning. Only getting to grips with some of the characters after HBO ordered extra scenes to flesh out the runtime.

"Two months before the pilot was to air, the episodes were averaging 39 minutes and HBO made then write and film 100 minutes of scenes to meet their contractual obligations. For example, they added a scene with Robert and Cersei - and realized that there was no scene with them.
