Game Of Thrones: 10 Storylines That Should Have Been Cut
4. Sam Goes Home
Sooner or later, we were going to have to meet the Tarlys, because of their involvement in season 7, but it was rather unfortunate that it was done the way it was. It seemed to be a rehashed reminder that Lord Tarly was a bit of a dick, and that he wasn't much of a fan of Sam, but we knew that. Everything about Sam said it, and he'd worked for several seasons to carve himself an unexpected hero position for himself, only to come back here for an unnecessary kicking.
The Sam we know would never have gone back home, and it felt like just another needless distraction on a particularly aimless story.
There were some positives to Sam's return home - like him stealing Heartsbane as a supposedly symbolic act of defiance - but it didn't have any comeback at all, and by the time the Tarlys returned with a new Dickon in tow, they'd completely forgotten the monstrous betrayal of the theft.
Almost like they didn't care about the sword anyway, so the only good part of that whole sequence was utterly pointless.
