8. Arresting Tyrion
One of the next major mistakes made after Bran is thrown out of a window. Arresting Tyrion was one of the stupider mistakes the Starks could have made, not only Catelyn for simply doing it, but also Ned for condoning it. He could have admitted his wifes mistake and sent for his release, but instead he supported her actions, bringing Jaimes wrath down upon him (another mistake in and of itself). Truthfully, the evidence pinning the order of the hit on Bran certainly seems like Tyrions doing, but us viewers know it wasnt him. That sort of knowledge makes these moments almost a bit hard to watch, as we have to witness two likable characters going at each other in a way over a misunderstanding. At the same time, this great drama leads to a thrilling cliffhanger ending for the episode in question. Naturally, this move also increases the tension between the two houses, and it leads to Ned being attacked in the streets when he admits to sanctioning the arrest, which is part of the reason Robb rides to fight the Lannisters. Knowing Jaimes personality and the situation at hand gives one cause to wonder if Ned brought a lot of this upon himself.
