Game Of Thrones: 10 Things From The TV Show That WON'T Be In The Winds Of Winter

8. Sam Cures Jorah's Greyscale

Game Of Thrones
HBO

In The Show:

After being exiled by Daenerys, Jorah Mormont is unfortunate enough to contract the dreaded disease greyscale while rescuing Tyrion Lannister from drowning. The two go on to take a Gladiator-like journey in travelling back to Meereen, where Jorah is eventually able to find his way back into Dany’s good graces.

Still, before the two can formally resume their alliance, Dany orders Jorah to return to Westeros and find a cure for the thought-deadly disease ravaging through his body. Ever loyal, Jorah soon winds up in The Citadel, where he crosses paths with Samwell Tarly. In a particularly gnarly scene, Sam peels Jorah’s infected skin away, and just like that, the affliction is cured.

You’d think the maesters would’ve been able to figure this out long ago, but nevermind.

Why It WON’T Happen In Winds:

Jorah doesn't have greyscale in the books, but another notable character, Jon Connington, certainly does. It feels safe to say, then, that giving Jorah the disease too would be overkill, storywise. At present, the disease Jorah should be worried about isn’t greyscale, but rather the bloody flux.

Known as the pale mare, the nasty plague is spreading rapidly throughout Slaver’s Bay, where Jorah and Tyrion just so happen to find themselves on the doorstep of another large conflict. A Dance With Dragons ends with the two signing over to the mercenary Second Sons, as part of Tyrion’s elaborate scheme to win favour with Daenerys.

There’s still a lot that needs to happen, then, before the Lion of Lannister even meets the Mother of Dragons, and by extension, before she can reunite with Jorah. Logical passages of time weren’t given a second thought on the show by the end, but in the final two books, it’s difficult to see Jorah finding the time to contract a wholly different disease and being dispatched to Westeros to cure it, all before joining Daenerys in her inevitable campaign to conquer the Seven Kingdoms.
