Game Of Thrones: 10 Things From The TV Show That WON'T Be In The Winds Of Winter
4. Fireproof Dany
In The Show:
The sight of Daenerys Targaryen walking into a pyre and emerging from the ashes unscathed, with three baby dragons in tow, was an incredible moment with which to end the show’s first season. It paralleled the iconic climax from the first very book in George RR Martin’s fantasy saga, with the majestic scene setting the stage and putting the “fire” in A Song of Ice and Fire going forward.
The show didn’t stop there, however. Season 6 finds Dany in the hands of a rival Khalasar, who spend their time deliberating whether to send Drogo’s former Khaleesi into a life of imprisonment, or to simply rape and kill her.
Naturally, the Mother of Dragons isn’t fond of either option. After Khal Moro delivers his brutal judgement, Dany takes control of the situation by setting the surrounding temple aflame, roasting everybody within to cinders. Almost everybody, that is. In an echo of that first season ending, Dany walks from the burning building, thoroughly naked and thoroughly unburnt.
Why It WON’T Happen In Winds:
George RR Martin has made it clear on numerous occasions that the initial miraculous feat that birthed Dany’s three dragons was just that, a miracle. As the man himself put it in back in 1999:
“TARGARYENS ARE NOT IMMUNE TO FIRE! The birth of Dany’s dragons was unique, magical, wondrous, a miracle. She is called The Unburnt because she walked into the flames and lived. But her brother sure as hell wasn’t immune to that molten gold.”
This would seem to suggest then, that the show writers took certain liberties in interpreting Dany’s survival in A Game of Thrones a little too literally. While Daenerys is in a similar predicament heading into The Winds of Winter surrounded by riders in the Dothraki Sea, it seems that she’ll have to find another way to escape than she does in the show. Having Drogon with her should certainly help in that regard…
