Game Of Thrones: 10 Times Fans Totally Overreacted To Book Changes

9. The Lannisters Send Their Regards

Here’s another example of the showrunners adjusting what readers saw as an iconic line of dialogue.

At the Red Wedding, the climax of all the horribleness is Roose Bolton stabbing Robb Stark and saying, “The Lannisters send their regards.” It’s a shocking and sad moment, and it was pretty much the same as in the books, with one minor exception.

In the book, instead of saying “The Lannisters send their regards,” Roose says “Jaime Lannister sends his regards.” This is in reference to earlier in the book when Jamie runs into Roose on his way to the wedding.

Again, a lot of readers complained about the change to a really memorable line, but this one makes a lot of sense too. Remember, Season 3 is the season when viewers are starting to turn around and really like Jaime during his adventures with Brienne. By name dropping Jaime during the Red Wedding, this would confuse a lot of viewers into thinking he had something to do with it, when in reality, Jaime had no part in the murder of the Starks.

Changing the line to “The Lannisters send their regards” makes a lot more sense and places the blame more on the Lannister family in general, as headed by Tywin, the one who actually planned the Red Wedding.
