Being born a woman in Westeros, Cersei Lannister always had to fight for the attention and recognition of her father. She always believed that she was far more suited to be Lord Tywin's heir than her twin brother, and that her mind would be a great asset to a ruler.

From this, Cersei learned to never back down from a fight, and while the battle she had first with Margaery, then the High Sparrow, would have been enough to finish off more than most for good, the Queen Regent kept fighting to the very end, doing anything to protect her son.

After her walk of atonement, rather than risk the consequences of being found guilty by trial, Cersei decided to blow up the Sept of Baelor instead with raging green wildfire. Not only did Cersei kill her son's wife Margaery, the High Sparrow, and her uncle Kevan, she destroyed the ancient House of Martell, and literally hundreds of innocent people as well.

While this mass murder was supposed to be to protect her son, Tommen was so struck with grief at the loss of not only his wife, but many of his citizens, he threw himself from a tower window, extinguishing the Baratheon line and leaving Cersei childless.
