Then

The dog of Joffrey Baratheon, serving as the young prince's personal bodyguard. Though not as much of a horrible bastard as his older brother, he is still something of a monster in the first season: he cuts down Mycah, the butcher's boy, without even blinking, and helps to kill Ned Stark's men. He is loyal to Joffrey and will largely do anything he's told to do, though signs of something more creep in when he stops Sansa from killing him, offering her a handkerchief.

Now

The Hound has been through a considerable transformation over the course of the show. It really started in Season 2, when he saved Sansa and later when he turned his back on the crown, with the unforgettable line of "f**k the King". That solidified his turn into more of a full-blown anti-hero, something he's continued to excel at ever since.

We've delved deeper into his psyche and fears, and the hate and desire to kill that drives him forward. He managed to form a surprisingly sweet relationship with Arya, so much so she even took him off her Kill List. Like his brother he died for a bit, but similarly returned (although in much more human fashion, as it turned out he didn't actually die) with a new outlook on life, and has a renewed sense of purpose, even joining the Brotherhood he once fought against. He's still a killer, but now he is far more at peace with who he is, and allows himself to be a better person as well.
