Game Of Thrones: 12 Things You Learn Rewatching Season 2
10. Blackwater Remains One Of The Show's Greatest Battles
When Blackwater first aired, it was a landmark moment for Game of Thrones. Up until that point, they'd largely avoided putting any big battle sequences on screen, but they needed to show this one in all its glory. The showrunners had to fight for a bigger budget, but the end result would be the first of many spectacular battles on the show.
After seven seasons, where we've had The Watchers on the Wall, Hardhome, Battle of the Bastards, and The Spoils of War, all of which had budgets outstripping Blackwater, you might think revisiting it that it's no longer quite as special. Wonderfully, that isn't the case.
While, yes, the show's battles have grown in scale, few can match what Blackwater does in terms of character. Neil Marshall puts you right in the thick of the action, and balances the blistering action with superb character work. It's all rooted in the actions of Tyrion, the Hound, Davos et al, and manages to have both jaw-dropping spectacle - the wildfire - and also gets really gritty and into the dirtiness of warfare.
With neither side truly the bad guys, there's an even greater level of investment in watching it, especially now we've spent so much more time with key players on both sides of the conflict. Things have gotten bigger, but rarely better.
