Game Of Thrones: 12 Ups And 5 Downs From Season 7

5. The War Of The Two Queens

Last season ended with Cersei taking the Iron Throne while Daenerys sailed for Westeros, so naturally a big part of this season was the War of the Two Queens.

Having Daenerys in Westeros added some much-needed agency to her storyline, and her arriving on Dragonstone was a genuinely touching moment (while the castle itself looked lush). Cersei, meanwhile, was afforded the opportunity to revel in her Mad Queen role, which Lena Headey grabbed with both hands.

It was in this storyline that we found some of the old Thrones, with conversations taking place in dimly lit rooms and political manoeuvering becoming important once again, as Cersei/Jaime and Daenerys/Tyrion plotted away around their respective impressive maps.

The rivalry gave us a couple of great action sequences, brought Tyrion back into the fold more (even if his plans were terrible), made Euron a bigger and better player, gave Dany and especially Cersei lots to work with, and led to the death of Olenna Tyrell, one of the best scenes of the season. It's still unresolved, pushed to one side due to the White Walkers, but while it was ongoing there was riveting drama and incredible spectacle to be found in the War of the Two Queens.
