The first season finale dealt with the fallout from Ned Stark's death, with Joffrey even leading Sansa up to gaze at his head impaled on the battlements, but in retaliation to the attack on the Starks, Robb and the North break away from the Seven Kingdoms and ultimately spark the war to come. Daenerys' intriguing first season storyline came to a close as she mercy-killed Khal Drogo after the dark magic failed to produce the results she expected, while he son also perished as a monster before she could even see him. She's at an extremely low ebb going into the last few minutes, but the intensity of stepping into Drogo's funeral pyre led to her emerging unscathed with three hatched dragons. This was her 'square one' with everything that happened before reset for a fresh start.
