As said before, everyone knew that Bran would play a huge part in the conclusion of Game of Thrones, however thanks to the supernatural aspect, and the years of journeying to learning such skills, we all thought he would be involved more than he ultimately was.

Thanks to Bran's timeline traveling North of the Wall, he was one of the few characters to physically come into contact with the Night King. Ever since then, the Stark child had a special connection with the leader of the white walkers, and the Battle of Winterfell suddenly revolved entirely around him.

Bran had also shown previously that he was capable of reaching into the past, and interacting with others, when his own father heard him whisper, and when he possessed Wylis, inadvertently turning the stable boy into Hodor. These were shocking moments, and it seemed that they could be leading to something bigger.

One theory suggested that the reason Bran and the Night King shared such a connection, was that they were the same person. If Bran could go back in time and warg into Hodor, then it was entirely plausible that he did the same to the human that would become the Night King.

The time traveller would have taken over the body of the future leader of the dead, in a futile attempt to prevent his transformation. However, this would have gone very wrong, trapping Bran in the body as the dragonglass pierced the heart of the would be ice zombie, bonding him and Bran forever.
