Hidden amongst all of the sexposition of season 1 was a nod to one of the big fantasy films of the 1980s. Viserys engages in some bath-talk with Doreah, telling her tales of all the incredible dragons of old ridden by brave Targaryens. One of the names he mentions is Vermithrax, or Vermithrax Pejorative. Thats the dragon from Dragonslayer, an epic fantasy that went on to receive Oscar nominations for its special effects and score, and clearly an influence on the dragons of Westeros as well.
