1. The Holy Grail
The people behind Game of Thrones are obviously big fans of Monty Python (and really, who isnt?), as they make a few subtle references to the comedy troupes film The Holy Grail. This includes Winterfell, in the pilot episode at least, being the same Scottish castle that served as Castle Anthrax in the movie. When Davos is having his reading lessons, Shireen tells him not to pronounce knight as ka-niggit, which is the way the French Knight says it. The best, though, was when Daenerys prepared to takeover Meereen. A fighter from the city rides out to meet her champion, Daario Naharis, who wins in a pretty convincing if rather laid-back style. Before that, though, the Meereenese challenger hurls an insult in Old Ghiscari at Dany, and it wasnt quite what the Mother of Dragons thought. The shows linguist has revealed this was a sneaky homage to the Holy Grail, as the insult is actually taken straight from the film:
Your mother is a hamster and your father smells of elderberries.
