Game Of Thrones: 25 Easter Eggs, In-Jokes And References You Need To See

1. The Holy Grail

The people behind Game of Thrones are obviously big fans of Monty Python (and really, who isn€™t?), as they make a few subtle references to the comedy troupe€™s film The Holy Grail. This includes Winterfell, in the pilot episode at least, being the same Scottish castle that served as Castle Anthrax in the movie. When Davos is having his reading lessons, Shireen tells him not to pronounce knight as €˜ka-niggit€™, which is the way the French Knight says it. The best, though, was when Daenerys prepared to takeover Meereen. A fighter from the city rides out to meet her champion, Daario Naharis, who wins in a pretty convincing if rather laid-back style. Before that, though, the Meereenese challenger hurls an insult in Old Ghiscari at Dany, and it wasn€™t quite what the Mother of Dragons thought. The show€™s linguist has revealed this was a sneaky homage to the Holy Grail, as the insult is actually taken straight from the film:
€œYour mother is a hamster and your father smells of elderberries.€
